Halibut Cove Alaska

Location and Climate
Halibut Cove is in the Kachemak Bay State Park on the Kenai Peninsula. It lies 12 miles southeast of Homer on the south shore of Kachemak Bay. Halibut Cove is located in the Homer Recording District. The area encompasses 7.2 sq. miles of land and 4.6 sq. miles of water. Winter temperatures range from 14 to 27; summer temperatures vary from 45 to 65. Average annual precipitation is 24 inches.

History, Culture and Demographics
The Cove was named by W.H. Dall of the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey in 1880. Alaska Natives represent 3.8% of the population. Halibut Cove residents include many artists. There is a local community association.

During the April 1990 U.S. Census, there were 93 total housing units, and 70 of these were vacant. The official unemployment rate at that time was 0%, with 86 jobs estimated to be in the community and 0% of all adults not in the work force. The median household income was $68,760, and 0% of residents were living below the poverty level.

Economy and Transportation
Many residents are self-employed artists; others work in seasonal construction jobs. Six residents hold commercial fishing permits. There is no road access to Halibut Cove. Boats and float planes are the primary means of transportation. The State Ferry serves nearby Homer.
